The Mount Rainier search for missing outdoors writer Karen Sykes has been suspended with the recovery of the body of a "deceased female" in the area where teams have been focusing their efforts. Mount Rainier National Park spokeswoman Patti Wold said that the remains were found off the trail near Boundary Creek in rough, steep terrain — an area difficult to access and not commonly traveled. ​Officials from the Summit County Rescue Group and the Summit County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call involving two climbers stranded on Mount Royal Tuesday night, May 27, outside of Frisco. The pair — described as men in their 20s visiting the area from out of state — were reported to be experienced climbers but unfamiliar with the area. They told rescuers they had climbed up a series of steep pitches on the front of the mountain shortly before sunset, using ropes and proper equipment. Rescuers said the pair then failed to take the correct hiking trail back down from the summit and found themselves on what they thought was an alternate route. Continue reading
Fairbanks, AK - It would appear that Good Samaritan Gerald DeBerry has joined the ranks of those gone missing in the wilds of the 49th state. Friends of DeBerry, who on Thursday continued an informal search for his body in rugged country 70 miles north of Fairbanks, can only hope for the best. People familiar with October weather conditions figured DeBerry for dead even before Alaska State Troopers decided to scale back a three-day search, Wednesday night. Continue reading
